Kenya 21 Dead, Over 30 Missing After Deadly Landslide

At least 21 people have been confirmed dead and more than 30 others are missing after a massive landslide struck western Kenya. The tragedy occurred in Elgeyo-Marakwet County following days of relentless rainfall that triggered flash floods and mudslides.

Rescue teams, including local authorities and volunteers, have been deployed to the affected areas to search for survivors buried under debris. Emergency officials say the operation is being hampered by blocked roads, unstable terrain, and ongoing heavy rains.

Kenyan Red Cross officials reported that several homes were completely destroyed, leaving dozens of families displaced and without shelter. Many survivors have been moved to temporary camps as rescue operations continue under difficult conditions.

Authorities have warned that more rainfall is expected in the coming days, increasing the risk of further landslides and flooding in nearby regions. Residents living along riverbanks and hillsides have been urged to evacuate immediately.

The government has promised relief assistance for affected families, including food supplies, medical aid, and emergency shelter. President William Ruto expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and assured that all necessary measures will be taken.

Environmental experts say deforestation and unregulated construction have worsened the region’s vulnerability to such natural disasters, calling for urgent reforms in land management and safety policies.
