Karachi’s Grim Year: Crime, Accidents Claim Hundreds of Lives in 2025

Karachi experienced a deeply troubling year in 2025 as rising crime and frequent accidents together claimed hundreds of lives across the city. Police and rescue data indicate that residents continued to face serious threats to life, both on the streets and on the roads, despite repeated law enforcement measures.

Street crime remained a major concern throughout the year, with incidents of armed robbery, mugging, and targeted attacks reported from multiple districts. Several killings occurred during resistance to robberies, while others were linked to personal disputes and criminal rivalries, adding to the city’s persistent insecurity.

Traffic accidents also emerged as a leading cause of death, particularly involving motorcycles, heavy vehicles, and public transport. Reckless driving, speeding, and violations of traffic rules were frequently cited by officials as key reasons behind fatal crashes on major roads and highways.

Water tankers, dumpers, and buses were involved in numerous deadly incidents, often in densely populated areas. Poor vehicle maintenance and lack of strict oversight further worsened the situation, leaving pedestrians and commuters highly vulnerable during daily travel.

Rescue services reported that many victims were young earners supporting families, highlighting the severe social impact of these preventable deaths. Hospitals across Karachi regularly received accident and violence victims, placing additional pressure on already stretched emergency services.

Experts and civil society groups have warned that without comprehensive reforms, Karachi may continue to suffer such losses. They stress the need for stronger policing, improved traffic management, strict enforcement of laws, and public awareness to ensure citizen safety.
