Karachi has embarked on the production of AI-powered driverless cars, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s technological advancement. The initiative, led by the National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI) at NED University, is the first of its kind in the country. A virtual driving system has already been launched, and efforts are underway to bring autonomous vehicles onto the roads.
To accelerate the project, a specialized electronic vehicle imported from China is being modified with AI tools, enabling real-time autonomous control. Engineers have made notable progress in software development, with test drives expected within six months. Research students involved in the project have successfully implemented mapping, speed regulation, object detection, and lane recognition, while ongoing work focuses on signal recognition and steering control.
