Karachi to Experience Drop in Temperature as Cold Winds Return

Karachi is set to witness a drop in temperatures later this week, as cold winds from Balochistan make a return after a brief period of milder weather. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has noted a slight rise in the city’s minimum temperature recently due to the easing of cold winds. Today, Karachi recorded a minimum temperature of 13.5°C, with fog reducing visibility to just 1,200 metres.

However, this temporary break in the cold weather will soon end as a new weather system from the west brings cold winds from Balochistan. The winds are expected to reach Karachi by January 24, causing temperatures to fall once again. Meteorologists predict that the city’s minimum temperature could drop to 9°C, as the northeast winds intensify. The weather is anticipated to remain dry and chilly, with a maximum temperature of 29°C in the coming 24 hours.

In the midst of these changing weather patterns, Pakistan is also facing a growing risk of drought due to a significant reduction in rainfall across the country. The Meteorological Department reported a 40% decrease in rainfall over the last four months, with some provinces, including Sindh, Balochistan, and Punjab, experiencing severe shortfalls. This rainfall deficit is likely to bring forward the summer season, with rising temperatures expected in the near future.

Several areas of Punjab, such as Pothohar, Layyah, Bhakkar, and Multan, have already begun to show signs of drought. Major cities like Karachi, Hyderabad, and Badin in Sindh, as well as towns in Balochistan, are also facing early-stage drought conditions. Experts warn that if the rainfall shortage continues, the situation could worsen, particularly in agriculture-dependent regions.
