Karachi Port Begins Pakistan’s First Standardised Bunkering Operations

In a landmark development, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced the launch of standardised bunkering operations at Karachi Port. This is the first time such regulated operations are being introduced in Pakistan.

The minister said the initiative aligns Pakistan’s largest port with international maritime safety and operational standards. He added that it will help improve the country’s competitiveness in the regional shipping industry.

Bunkering refers to the process of fueling ships for propulsion and onboard use. It includes the storage, transfer, and management of marine fuels such as oil and gas. Proper bunkering ensures safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant refueling, supporting smooth maritime transport and global shipping operations.

Chaudhry noted that the project was launched under the guidance of the Prime Minister, who has emphasized the modernization of port services and broader upgrades to Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure.

The introduction of regulated bunkering will fill a longstanding gap in services at Karachi Port. The move is expected to attract more international shipping lines, offering reliable and streamlined port services. Increased vessel traffic will generate higher foreign-exchange earnings through port fees, marine services, and related commercial activities like repairs, supplies, and maritime logistics. The expansion is also projected to create jobs across the maritime economy.

Compliance with international standards for fuel quality, safety, documentation, and transparency is crucial for gaining the trust of ship owners and global trading companies.

The first phase of bunkering operations will begin in collaboration with a leading international energy trading company. Future phases will involve domestic refineries supplying larger quantities of refined fuel, benefiting the national exchequer.

Karachi Port Trust has thoroughly reviewed existing bunkering practices, studied global procedures, drafted necessary documentation, and engaged stakeholders to ensure a successful launch.
