Karachi Police Issue Over 48,000 E-Challans in Two Weeks

In the past two weeks, Karachi police have issued 48,211 e-challans under the new “Track and Trace System” for various traffic violations, officials reported. Around 4,500 citizens have requested waivers so far.

Data shows the majority of challans — 31,555 — were for not wearing seatbelts, followed by 8,431 for riding without helmets and 2,304 for overspeeding. From October 27 to November 9, 2,009 challans were issued for signal violations, 1,263 for using mobile phones while driving, 670 for tinted windows, 585 for unauthorized number plates, 556 for wrong-way driving, and 368 for carrying passengers on rooftops.

Additional challans included 250 for no-parking violations, 233 for stop-line breaches, 132 for overloading, 65 for improper lane usage, and 58 for driving against one-way traffic. A traffic police spokesperson confirmed that no e-challans have been issued yet for non-payment of vehicle tax.

Since the system’s launch, about 4,800 people visited traffic facilitation centres after receiving e-challans. Over 90 percent of these were waived, while the rest were sent to a special committee for review.

Earlier, Sindh Police IG Ghulam Nabi Memon stated that fines for 50 types of traffic violations under the new laws have been fixed at Rs5,000, with uniform enforcement across the province.
