Karachi Police File FIR Against Officer Over Obscene Social Media Post

Karachi police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against one of their own officers, Station Investigation Officer (SIO) Abrar Shah, after he allegedly posted derogatory remarks about former President Asif Ali Zardari on social media. The incident, which took place on April 2, 2025, sparked a complaint from duty officer Yaqoob of the Sukkun police station.

Shah’s offensive post, which was shared on social media, led to the filing of the FIR under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016 (PECA), a law aimed at addressing cybercrimes. Screenshots of the post were provided as evidence by the complainant, leading to Shah’s arrest by the Sukkun police. The case has now been transferred to the Investigation Officer for further action.

In a separate development, authorities have also filed three additional FIRs under the PECA 2025 for allegedly spreading anti-state propaganda against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and state institutions on social media. The FIRs, filed at Shahdara, Shahdara Town, and Kot Lakhpat police stations, accuse political groups of using artificial intelligence (AI) to create manipulated videos targeting the CM.

The police have claimed that these manipulated videos were part of a coordinated effort to promote an anti-state narrative and incite unrest on digital platforms.
