Karachi police have announced a clear date to launch a citywide crackdown against vehicles using illegal, fake, or non-standard number plates, aiming to strengthen enforcement. The decision was taken amid rising concerns over crime detection difficulties caused by unreadable, fancy, or altered number plates across the city’s busy roads and neighbourhoods.
Senior police officials said the operation will begin on the announced date and will involve both traffic police and district police teams working jointly. Checkpoints will be established at major arteries, entry and exit points, and sensitive locations. Vehicles found with duplicate numbers, decorative plates, or plates not issued by the Excise and Taxation Department will face strict action.
Police authorities stated that illegal number plates seriously undermine law enforcement efforts. Criminals often exploit such plates to evade identification through CCTV cameras and routine checks. By enforcing standardised number plates, officials believe vehicle tracking will improve, helping police investigate crimes more effectively and deter offenders.
During the crackdown, fines will be imposed on violators under relevant traffic and motor vehicle laws. In certain cases, vehicles may also be impounded until legal compliance is ensured. Officials clarified that the campaign will cover all types of vehicles, including motorcycles, private cars, commercial transport, and government vehicles, without discrimination.
Karachi police have appealed to citizens to cooperate and ensure their vehicles are compliant before enforcement begins. Vehicle owners have been advised to obtain officially approved number plates from authorised government centres. Awareness messages will also be shared through media platforms to inform the public about penalties and procedures.
While many residents have welcomed the move as a step towards improved safety and discipline, some motorists fear potential misuse of authority. Addressing these concerns, police leadership assured that officers have been instructed to act professionally, transparently, and strictly within the law throughout the operation.
