Karachi Port Trust on High Alert Ahead of Expected Monsoon Rains

As monsoon clouds gather over Karachi, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) has issued a high alert and completed all necessary preparations to safeguard port operations and cargo amid the forecast of heavy rains.

According to KPT sources, proactive safety and operational measures have been implemented in anticipation of the approaching monsoon season. Ships docked at the port will be securely berthed and continuously monitored throughout their stay. The deployment of mooring lines and standby tugboats ensures swift emergency assistance if required.

A KPT spokesperson confirmed that a standby pilot will be available 24/7 to assist vessels navigating into the deep sea during severe weather conditions, aiming to reduce risks to maritime traffic.

“We’ve taken all precautionary steps to ensure cargo safety,” the spokesperson said. Special focus is being placed on container yards and terminals, where empty containers will be stacked no more than two-high to prevent accidents during strong winds and heavy rain.

Moreover, instructions have been issued to conduct maintenance checks and keep standby generators ready, guaranteeing an uninterrupted power supply and smooth continuation of port activities.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast moderate to heavy monsoon rains in Karachi over the coming days, prompting both civic and port authorities to prepare for potential urban flooding and related challenges.
