KARACHI: Residents of Karachi faced another day of intense heat and humidity on Tuesday, with temperatures reaching 39.9°C at the city’s official weather station. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) attributed the scorching conditions to stalled sea breezes, which typically provide relief.

The heatwave was further intensified by 53% humidity, making the weather feel even more oppressive. Some areas recorded even higher temperatures, with Jinnah Terminal hitting 40.7°C and Gulistan-e-Jauhar reaching 40.5°C.

However, slight relief is expected as the PMD predicts the return of sea breezes on Wednesday. Additionally, light rain showers and drizzle are forecast for Thursday morning and nighttime due to low-level clouds moving in from the Arabian Sea.

The PMD’s Early Warning Centre reported a humid air mass over eastern Sindh, contributing to the discomfort. Karachi is likely to experience stronger winds on Wednesday and Thursday, while other parts of the province may continue to endure hot and dry weather.

According to PMD expert Anjum Nazeer Zaigham, the recent heatwave was caused by a low-pressure system over India’s Gujarat region, which disrupted normal sea breeze patterns. On Tuesday, temperatures had already surpassed 39°C by 11 am due to the stalled winds.

While sea breezes are expected to resume by Tuesday evening, the city can anticipate light rain and drizzle early Thursday, offering some respite from the relentless heat.
