[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]On Friday, Justice Mussarat Hilali took oath as the second female judge in the Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan. The oath was administered by Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial in a ceremony held at the ceremonial hall of the SC. The event was attended by Attorney General for Pakistan Mansoor Usman Awan, senior judges, and lawyers.
Justice Hilali previously served as the Chief Justice of the Peshawar High Court (PHC). With her elevation to the Supreme Court, the total number of judges in the top court has increased to 16 out of the sanctioned strength of 17. President Dr. Arif Alvi appointed Justice Hilali as an apex court judge on Wednesday, following the approval of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) and the Parliamentary Committee on Judges’ Appointments.
Justice Hilali is the second female judge to become the chief justice of a high court in Pakistan, following Justice Tahira Safdar, who served as the Chief Justice of the Balochistan High Court. Born in Peshawar, Justice Hilali obtained her law degree from Khyber Law College, University of Peshawar. She has been an advocate since 1983 and was enrolled as an advocate of the Supreme Court in 2006.

Throughout her career, Justice Hilali has been recognized for her work as a civil society activist, member of the bar, and human rights advocate. She has served as an office-bearer of the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and held various positions in the PHC Bar Association. Justice Hilali has also been actively involved in the 2007 Lawyers’ Movement and has shown great resilience and courage in the face of adversity.
Her appointment to the Supreme Court marks another significant milestone for women in the judiciary of Pakistan.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
