Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) has refuted claims of a breakthrough on constitutional amendments with the federal government.

JUI-F spokesperson Aslam Ghauri clarified that it is the government’s responsibility, not JUI-F’s, to pass the constitutional amendments before October 25.

He mentioned that 90% of the draft amendments are ready and will be shared with PTI and PPP. However, he emphasized they oppose a constitutional court superior to the Supreme Court, reiterating their stance that the amendments should be acceptable to all.

If no consensus is reached on a constitutional court, Ghauri suggested forming a separate bench within the Supreme Court, comprising 4-5 judges under the Chief Justice. He stressed that the amendments serve the interests of Pakistan’s 250 million people, not any individual or government.

Ghauri also noted that the draft presented by the People’s Party differed from expectations, raising concerns for Bilawal.

Earlier reports suggested the government had achieved a breakthrough with JUI-F’s Maulana Fazlur Rehman regarding the proposed 26th constitutional amendment.

Sources indicated that an agreement was reached on creating a constitutional court. The amendment will be tabled in parliament after the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) session on October 15-16 in Islamabad, with discussions held at a meeting attended by President Asif Ali Zardari, PM Shehbaz Sharif, Nawaz Sharif, and Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

The government eventually accepted Fazlur Rehman’s suggestions on the amendment, sources added.
