JERUSALEM — Tensions between Iran and Israel escalated sharply overnight as both countries launched heavy attacks on each other’s cities and critical infrastructure, while diplomatic efforts for peace crumbled.

Late Saturday, Iranian missile strikes set off air raid sirens across Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, and Haifa, forcing millions into shelters. Explosions rocked the skies as Israel’s air defenses intercepted waves of incoming missiles.

Israeli strikes retaliated by targeting deep inside Iran, including major oil depots and the massive South Pars gas field, temporarily halting its operations. Meanwhile, Iranian reports confirmed dozens killed and widespread destruction in Tehran, including the collapse of a 14-story building, with children among the casualties.

The worsening violence led Iran to suspend nuclear talks with the U.S., while Israeli PM Netanyahu warned of intensified military actions. As threats of closing the Strait of Hormuz emerged and oil prices surged, world leaders, including Trump and Putin, called for restraint to prevent a full-blown regional war.
