Japan pulled off a dramatic comeback to beat Brazil 3-2 in a friendly match at Tokyo Stadium on Tuesday, earning their first ever victory against the South American giants.
Brazil led 2-0 at half-time with goals from Paulo Henrique and Gabriel Martinelli.
Japan turned the game around after the break. Takumi Minamino scored in the 52nd minute after a defensive lapse.
Shortly after, a Brazilian defender’s misclearance led to an own goal making it 2-2.
The winner came in the 71st minute when Ayase Ueda converted a corner delivered by Junya Ito with a well-timed header.
Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed disappointment over his team’s collapse in the second half. He urged his players to show more mental resilience in upcoming fixtures.
Japan’s home record also grows stronger with this win. They remain unbeaten at home in 21 matches.
