Severe flooding has struck southern Punjab, with Jalalpur Pirwala and Alipur among the hardest-hit tehsils. The Chenab River’s flow at Head Panjnad has surged to 668,000 cusecs, leading to widespread destruction and displacement.
Authorities reported that nearly 80% of Alipur Tehsil is submerged. Crops on hundreds of acres have been destroyed, and several villages have been completely washed away. Millions of residents are struggling to survive as rescue efforts continue.
In Multan, water levels at Head Muhammad Wala have shown slight improvement, dropping from 413.60 to 412.90 feet. The main road has reopened, but officials remain cautious as risks of further flooding persist.
In Jalalpur Pirwala, officials made a controlled breach in Gilani Dam to prevent greater damage. The diverted water is now flowing towards Bahadurpur North, Bahadurpur South, Long, Sabira, and Kanhan. Residents in these areas have been urged to evacuate without delay.
Meanwhile, a boat carrying flood victims capsized in Darabpur village, Alipur, on Wednesday. According to rescue officials, the boat tipped when an extra person tried to climb aboard. Fortunately, all passengers survived without injuries.
Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb monitored reinforcement work at Basti Baharan, directing workers to immediately fill cracks in temporary dams. To protect Jalalpur city, authorities also made controlled breaches on Uch Sharif Road. CPO Sadiq Ali Dogar said the step was necessary as pressure on protective barriers was increasing.
The Flood Forecasting Division has warned of very high flood levels at Head Panjnad, Sudhanai, and Ganda Singh Wala. High floods continue at Head Sulaimanki, Head Islam, and Mailsi Siphon, while moderate flooding has been reported at Guddu Barrage, Sukkur Barrage, Trimo, and Baloki.
The situation in Jalalpur Pirwala remains critical, with thousands still in need of urgent relief and evacuation.
