LAHORE: The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has stated that the country has adequate petrol and diesel reserves, rejecting reports of a nationwide fuel shortage. However, concerns continue to grow after the All Pakistan Petrol Pump Owners Association called on the government to intervene urgently, warning that an artificial shortage could disrupt fuel supplies and trigger panic among the public.
Despite the official assurance, Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association Chairman Abdul Sami Khan claimed that petrol shortages have already started at several fuel stations across the country. According to him, dealers are receiving nearly 50 percent less petrol than their usual demand, resulting in empty pumps and increasing frustration among customers.
Khan alleged that the government is not presenting the true picture of petroleum reserves and insisted that available stocks are insufficient. He suggested removing the petroleum levy and other taxes to reduce pressure on consumers and prevent further price increases that could heavily impact low-income citizens and motorcyclists.
Reports from different areas indicate a tense situation at petrol pumps, with arguments and disputes breaking out as people rush to fill their tanks. Dealers say the situation is deteriorating quickly, and some stations have already run out of fuel. They warn that if the shortage worsens, it could eventually lead to a law-and-order situation.
Khan also appealed to the Inspector General of Sindh to ensure security at petrol pumps due to rising tensions among customers. He added that dealers cannot continue selling fuel at extremely high prices and hinted that some outlets might be forced to shut down if the government fails to address the issue.
Meanwhile, government officials have rejected these claims and reassured the public that sufficient petroleum reserves are available to meet national demand. Authorities also warned that strict action will be taken against anyone involved in hoarding fuel, which they believe may be contributing to the reported shortages.
