Iraq Sets New Age Limits for Pilgrims Visiting Sacred Sites

Iraq has introduced new regulations for pilgrims visiting its holy sites, adding age-based conditions for visa approval.

According to the Ministry of Religious Affairs spokesperson Muhammad Umar Butt, men under 50 will not be granted pilgrimage visas if traveling alone. However, those under 50 may still apply when accompanied by their families.

Officials said the move aims to streamline the pilgrimage process, enhance safety, and manage the massive crowds that gather during major religious events. They clarified the policy is not intended to curb religious freedom but to ensure better security and logistical arrangements.

The new rules cover all foreign applicants seeking to visit Iraq’s revered shrines and holy cities. Authorities have advised individuals and travel operators to review the updated requirements before applying.

This marks a major shift in Iraq’s pilgrimage policy and is expected to impact many prospective visitors.
