Major General Mohammad Bagheri, the Chief of General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, visited Pakistan on Monday, holding crucial talks with Army Chief General Asim Munir and President Asif Ali Zardari. The visit, set against the backdrop of evolving international and regional dynamics, sought to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation and discuss key issues affecting both countries.
During his visit to the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, General Bagheri was warmly received with a guard of honor and laid a floral wreath at the Yadgar-e-Shuhada, honoring Pakistan’s martyrs. The two military leaders engaged in discussions about the regional security environment and enhancing defence ties. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the meeting also addressed matters related to mutual concerns in the region, with no additional details shared.

Speaking to Iranian media, General Bagheri emphasized the expanding military cooperation between Iran and Pakistan, particularly focusing on the long, shared border. He stated that both nations were working to transform the border into “a border of friendship” and a hub for broader economic connections. He also highlighted the shared stances of Iran and Pakistan on regional issues and expressed the desire for a coordinated position in global forums.
In a meeting with President Asif Ali Zardari, General Bagheri discussed the importance of strengthening trade relations and combating terrorism, which both countries view as a mutual challenge. The two sides agreed to enhance their collaboration to address these issues effectively. The Iranian general also praised Pakistan’s stance on Gaza and Lebanon, further cementing the fraternal ties between the two nations.
Meanwhile, the ongoing diplomatic dialogue between the two countries continued with Ambassador Sadiq, Pakistan’s special representative for Afghanistan, meeting with Hashem Ashjazade, Iran’s Special Envoy for Afghanistan. Both parties expressed their commitment to tackling the changing geopolitical situation and regional challenges together.
