Israel was preparing for a ground assault against Hamas in Gaza in response to an earlier Hamas attack that resulted in civilian casualties and hostage-taking. The conflict has resulted in severe bombardment and a blockade in Gaza, causing significant casualties.
Efforts are being made to prevent the conflict from spreading regionally, especially into Lebanon, where Hezbollah, backed by Iran, has clashed with Israel. UN Middle East peace envoy Tor Wennesland engaged in diplomatic discussions to secure the release of hostages, ensure humanitarian access, and prevent the conflict from expanding.
