Iran has recalled its envoys from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. The decision came after the reimposition of United Nations sanctions on Tehran.
State media reported that Iran condemned the European trio for supporting the snapback of Security Council resolutions. These sanctions had been lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal but are now restored.
The move followed the failure of Russia and China to delay the process at the UN Security Council. Their draft resolution gained support from only four members.
The sanctions will block Iran from global cooperation in banking, military, shipping, and nuclear sectors.
The announcement has put more strain on Iran’s fragile economy. On Saturday, the rial fell to a record low, trading at over 1.1 million per US dollar in Tehran’s open market.
Experts warn the sanctions will worsen inflation and hardship for ordinary Iranians. However, the scale of the impact will depend on international enforcement.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that inspections at Iranian sites resumed this week. It did not say whether these included facilities attacked earlier this year by the US and Israel.
Iran’s nuclear chief, Mohammad Eslami, accused the IAEA of ignoring those attacks. He repeated that Iran has no plans to build nuclear weapons.
President Masoud Pezeshkian claimed that the US and Israel aim to destabilize Iran’s political system. He rejected any new compromise under the current circumstances.
