Middle East Tensions Rise After Iran Fires Cruise Missiles

Iran launched a volley of cruise missiles at a US aircraft carrier on Wednesday amid rising tensions in the Middle East. The strikes came as military action spread across several countries, including Israel, Lebanon, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia.

The conflict began on February 28 after a US-Israeli bombing campaign on Iran. It has since escalated rapidly, impacting civilians, infrastructure, and global energy markets. Iran’s military claimed its missiles forced the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier group to change course and warned of “powerful strikes” if the fleet comes within range again.

In retaliation, Israel carried out airstrikes targeting sites in Tehran and a submarine development facility in Isfahan. Meanwhile, southern Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold, was heavily bombed, displacing over one million people and causing more than 1,000 deaths. Local residents in Lebanon, like Khalil in Tyre, have vowed to remain despite the attacks, saying, “Our heart is here.”

Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, although conflicting statements have emerged. US President Donald Trump claimed a 15-point peace plan was sent to Iran, while Iran’s ambassador to Pakistan denied any direct or indirect negotiations had taken place. Regional mediators reportedly continue shuttling messages between the two sides to find a peaceful resolution.

Iranian officials have maintained strong rhetoric, with parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warning the US against testing Iran’s resolve. Iranian media have also criticized US leadership, reflecting the heightened tensions and public sentiment in the country.

The conflict has further affected global oil markets. The Strait of Hormuz, through which one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, has been partially blocked, causing fuel prices to surge worldwide. Iran assured safe passage for non-hostile vessels but restricted entry for US and Israeli ships. Countries like Vietnam and Sri Lanka have taken steps to conserve fuel due to the rising costs.
