Mobile phone prices in Pakistan, especially for premium models like the iPhone, are already steep. However, a new tariff policy introduced by former US President Donald Trump may push them even higher, potentially exceeding Rs1 million.

This development spells trouble for tech lovers in Pakistan, as the cost of an iPhone could surge to around $3,500 (over Rs10 lac) due to fresh US-imposed tariffs. A US financial analyst highlighted that increased duties on Chinese and Taiwanese imports could significantly raise prices of electronics globally, including in Pakistan.

The proposed tariffs include a 50% tax on imports from China and a 32% levy on Taiwanese goods. Given that many iPhone components originate from these countries, the new tariffs could drive the price of iPhones to more than triple their current rate.

This possible spike in prices is worrisome for both gadget enthusiasts and general consumers in Pakistan, where inflation and currency depreciation have already strained purchasing power. A million-rupee iPhone would become an unattainable luxury for most.

Although Apple devices are primarily imported from the US and other nations, the reliance on Chinese and Taiwanese parts means the tariffs will directly impact final retail prices.

The announcement has sparked concern across Pakistan’s tech community and among mobile users already burdened by inflation and rising costs. Experts warn that these tariffs might not only inflate smartphone prices but also make other electronic goods less affordable
