Internet Disruptions in Pakistan Due to Submarine Cable Fault, PTA Confirms

Internet users across Pakistan are facing connectivity issues due to a fault in the international submarine cable AAE1, as confirmed by the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA).

A PTA spokesperson stated that the affected cable is one of the seven submarine cables linking Pakistan to global internet traffic. The fault has resulted in disruptions to internet and broadband services nationwide. Efforts are currently underway to repair the cable, with relevant teams actively working to resolve the issue. The PTA assured the public that it is closely monitoring the situation and will share updates as repairs progress.

Recent Developments in Internet Infrastructure

Earlier today, during a meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology, PTA Chairman Maj Gen (Retd) Hafeezur Rehman highlighted significant challenges in Pakistan’s internet infrastructure. He revealed that three out of the seven submarine cables had been severed earlier this year, causing extensive disruptions. The cables were eventually restored in October 2024 after a delay of five months.

The Chairman also addressed concerns about ongoing internet service issues, noting that major platforms like TikTok, Facebook, and WhatsApp had reported technical problems. Despite inquiries to these companies, the issues remain unresolved.

Investment Gap in Telecom Infrastructure

During the session, the PTA Chairman emphasized the lack of government investment in telecom infrastructure, describing it as a critical gap. He stressed the urgent need to develop “digital highways” to prevent recurring connectivity issues. Without such advancements, Pakistan’s internet services remain vulnerable to future disruptions.

Authority Over Social Media Platforms

Addressing concerns about social media platform accessibility, the PTA Chairman clarified that the Pakistan Telecommunication (Re-organization) Act (PICA) gives the government the authority to block or unblock platforms under specific directives. He dismissed claims of PTA acting as a middleman or intentionally slowing down social media services, reassuring that the regulatory body operates transparently.

The recent fault in the submarine cable underscores the need for enhanced infrastructure investment to ensure stable and reliable internet connectivity across the country.
