Installation of warning systems for Glofs

The project has been launched as part of the United Nations Development Program’s Glof-II project (UNDP). According to the UNDP, these devices will offer prompt notice for safe evacuations in the event of any upcoming crisis. The systems should operate from March through September.

The project included, according to the UNDP’s progress report, the purchase of early warning systems for 24 valleys, the completion of 28 irrigation schemes, the stabilisation of slopes on 160 hectares of land, the establishment of community-based disaster risk management committees as well as hazard watch groups, GIS mapping, the feasibility of bio-engineering, and forest surveys, among other things. Eight valleys in KP and 16 valleys in GB are currently working on the project.

The report also stated that it wanted to increase public services to reduce the risk of disasters, improve community preparedness and disaster response, and empower communities to recognise and manage risks connected with Glofs and related impacts of climate change.
