Instagram has introduced a new feature allowing users to add music to their profiles, drawing inspiration from the early days of Myspace. Pop star Sabrina Carpenter has been tapped to debut the feature, showcasing her new song “Taste” on her Instagram profile. Fans can listen to the track via a music player embedded on her page, offering a nostalgic touch reminiscent of Myspace’s profile songs from the 2000s.

Meta, the company behind Instagram, acknowledges the feature’s Myspace roots in its press release. Users can now display songs on their profiles “just like in the early 2000s,” continuing Instagram’s trend of adopting elements from other platforms, such as Snapchat’s Stories and TikTok’s interface.

Sabrina Carpenter, who has seen a breakout year in 2024 with hits like “Espresso,” was selected to introduce the feature to Instagram’s Gen Z audience. Her music has become a popular backdrop for short-form videos on social media, and the launch of “Taste” is expected to boost engagement on the platform. Instagram has also incorporated Easter eggs related to Carpenter’s music, including a feature that turns Notes baby blue when users type specific lyrics from her viral hit “Espresso.”

If “Taste” achieves similar success to Carpenter’s previous tracks, it could affirm Instagram’s decision to revive a classic social media feature. The return of Myspace-inspired elements like profile music underscores the lasting impact of mid-2000s internet culture on today’s tech landscape.
