Industrial Units To Get Electricity Via Single-Point In SEZs

The government has introduced a new electricity supply system for industrial units in Special Economic Zones (SEZs). This system will provide electricity at a single point, simplifying power distribution and billing.

Under the new arrangement, industrial units will be responsible for managing their own electricity distribution and billing. This change removes the need for direct involvement from electricity distribution companies (DISCOs).

The Ministry of Energy directed all DISCOs to work directly with SEZ administrations. A spokesperson said this step aims to reduce delays and improve the speed of power connections to industrial units.

Previously, intervention from field staff caused delays and created opportunities for corruption. The new policy intends to eliminate these problems and ensure smoother electricity supply.

On February 25, the Power Division submitted a formal request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for approval. After consultation, NEPRA issued directions on August 11 to finalize agreements with SEZs based on this new supply model.

Experts believe this system will encourage more investments by providing efficient electricity services to industrial units. Faster connections and fewer obstacles will help boost industrial growth.

The government expects this change to make SEZs more attractive for local and foreign investors. Giving industrial units control over their internal electricity distribution can also increase transparency.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance Pakistan’s industrial sector. It aligns with the country’s goals of improving the business environment and accelerating economic development.

Overall, the new single-point electricity supply system aims to benefit industrial units by making energy access simpler, faster, and more reliable.
