Indian SC Orders Probe Into Anant Ambani’s Vantara Wildlife Centre

The Indian SC has ordered an investigation into Vantara, a wildlife rescue centre run by the Ambani family’s Reliance Foundation. This follows public interest petitions raising concerns about the treatment and acquisition of animals at the centre.

Vantara, located in Gujarat, is led by Anant Ambani, son of billionaire Mukesh Ambani. The centre has rescued thousands of animals and hosts the world’s largest elephant hospital. Despite allegations, the Indian SC found no evidence of illegal animal acquisition or mistreatment so far.

The Indian SC directed an independent inquiry to ensure transparency and accountability. The court noted that some wildlife groups alleged that regulatory authorities failed in their duties. The investigation will be led by a former Supreme Court judge and will review animal acquisitions, especially elephants, and compliance with India’s Wild Life Protection Act.

Vantara has promised full cooperation with the probe and reaffirmed its mission of animal rescue and care. The centre is home to more than 150,000 animals from over 2,000 species.

The investigation panel must submit its report to the Indian SC by September 12. The probe comes after protests by local communities in Maharashtra about the relocation of a culturally important elephant to Vantara.

Earlier this year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Vantara, calling it a safe place for animals that promotes ecological sustainability.

Anant Ambani also serves as an executive director at Reliance Industries and is involved in its technology and telecom businesses. Vantara continues to provide dedicated care for wildlife, including special kitchens that prepare food for elephants.

The Indian SC’s order reflects the importance of monitoring animal welfare and regulatory compliance at large wildlife centres like Vantara.
