Indian Police Raid Offices and Residence of Syed Ali Geelani, Seize Key Documents

In a troubling escalation of political repression, Indian police recently raided the residence and office of the late Syed Ali Geelani, a prominent leader in the Kashmir liberation movement, seizing critical books and documents associated with his pro-independence stance.

The raid, which took place in the early hours, targeted both Geelani’s home and the office of the Jammu and Kashmir Freedom Movement (Tehreek-e-Hurriyat). During the operation, various important materials were confiscated, including works authored by Geelani himself, which are considered vital to the region’s resistance movement.

According to Kashmir Media Service (KMS), this is part of a larger pattern of suppression in Kashmir, with over 100 political and civil rights leaders reportedly subjected to similar raids over the past year. In these operations, authorities have often seized documents and electronic devices, intensifying efforts to curtail dissent and monitor opposition.

The All Parties Hurriyat Conference, a key pro-independence alliance, has strongly condemned these actions. They view the raids as an attempt to silence the voices of Kashmir’s resistance movement and to further suppress the political activists advocating for Kashmiri rights under Indian rule.

This crackdown is indicative of India’s broader strategy to tighten control over the disputed region, which has seen increased political suppression and diminishing space for opposition in recent years. The ongoing raids on activists’ residences and offices underscore the increasingly repressive environment in Kashmir.
