Recent reports reveal that the Indian Navy has faced over 28 major operational incidents and mission failures in the past 13 years, highlighting persistent technical and operational challenges. Several naval vessels, including INS Ranvijay, INS Ranvir, and the INS Brahmaputra, have experienced significant issues in just a three-year span. Additionally, the nuclear submarine INS Arihant was withdrawn from service due to technical complications.

A major incident occurred in September 2024 when a naval project encountered operational difficulties. In 2019, a naval helicopter crash-landed into the sea, though all crew members, including the pilot, were safely rescued. Current data also indicates that only seven of India’s fourteen submarines are operational, with the navy recently commissioning the nuclear submarine INS Arighat amid these ongoing challenges.
These operational setbacks come despite significant defense investments in naval projects, all while India grapples with broader economic issues, including approximately 140 million citizens living below the poverty line.
