Raj Sidpara, a 50-year-old man of Indian origin from Leicester, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a UK court for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Tarnjeet Riaz, also known as Tarnjeet Chagger. According to Leicestershire Police, Sidpara must serve at least 21 years before he becomes eligible for parole.
The incident occurred on May 6 at Sidpara’s residence in the East Midlands. Emergency services found Tarnjeet, aged 44, with extensive injuries, including facial trauma, brain bleeding, and multiple rib fractures. While Sidpara admitted to manslaughter, he denied intending to kill Tarnjeet. However, the court concluded that the attack was “savage and merciless,” involving punching, kicking, and stomping on the victim.

Judge William Harbage condemned Sidpara’s lack of remorse and refusal to provide an explanation for his actions. The court also noted Sidpara’s history of alcohol dependence and a criminal record that included 24 convictions for 46 offenses, such as harassment and threats against previous partners.
Leicestershire Police used the sentencing to highlight the urgent need to address domestic abuse, coinciding with their support of “White Ribbon Day,” a global campaign against violence toward women. Detective Inspector Emma Matts called for increased awareness and urged victims of domestic abuse to seek help before it is too late.
“Tarnjeet was killed by someone she trusted, a person who should have protected her,” said Matts. While Sidpara now faces justice, Tarnjeet’s family continues to struggle with profound grief and unanswered questions.
