An Indian farmer was astonished when one of his hens laid a rare blue egg, sparking widespread curiosity in his village.
The hen belongs to Syed Noor, who bought it two years ago for ₹20. He explained that all ten of his hens follow the same diet and usually lay white or yellowish eggs. “This is the first time I’ve seen a blue egg,” Noor said, adding that he has kept it safe.
Word of the unusual egg quickly spread, and villagers flocked to Noor’s home to see it.
Veterinary experts also expressed surprise. Dr. Ashok from the Department of Animal Husbandry said hens may occasionally lay eggs with greenish or yellow shells, but a blue one is extremely rare. He attributed the color to the pigment biliverdin, genetic factors, or diet changes.
Noor’s friend Hafeez confirmed that the hen had always laid white eggs until two days ago, making the sudden change remarkable. Another veterinary officer, Dr. Raghu Nayak, also highlighted pigmentation and genetic mutations as possible reasons.
Blue eggs are generally linked to specific breeds like the Chilean Araucana and the Whiting True Blue Chicken, a hybrid developed in the US.
