Chenab River Water Level Surges After Sudden Dip; Authorities Issue Evacuation Alert in Akhnoor
AKHNOOR – The Chenab River experienced a sharp rise in water levels on Monday evening, just hours after a significant dip was recorded earlier in the day, prompting local authorities to issue evacuation warnings for low-lying areas.
The sudden fluctuation followed controlled gate operations at the Baglihar and Salal dams, which had temporarily reduced the river’s flow earlier in the morning. Visuals from the area later showed the river surging with renewed intensity as the dam gates were closed.

Police, Administration Urge Caution
Authorities in Occupied Jammu & Kashmir had earlier warned residents, stating:
“Chenab River’s water level is about to increase soon. All of you are requested to come out of the river…”
The local police and administration implemented swift precautionary measures to ensure public safety, especially in vulnerable flood-prone zones along the riverbanks.
Regional Tensions Add to Concerns
The water level changes come amid heightened regional tensions, raising concerns about water management and potential downstream impacts in areas dependent on the Chenab River.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, and citizens are advised to remain alert and follow official instructions.
