India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan by 88 runs in a Women’s World Cup match at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, but the game was overshadowed by controversy on and off the field.
Tensions began at the toss when Pakistan captain Fatima Sana’s call was misheard, leading to a disputed decision in her favor. Later, Pakistan’s Muneeba Ali was controversially ruled out after a television review, sparking heated protests.
The rivalry was further underlined when both captains skipped the customary handshake and players avoided post-match greetings, continuing the frostiness that stemmed from the men’s Asia Cup in Dubai.
Batting first, India posted 247 with Harleen Deol (46) steadying the innings and Richa Ghosh (35* off 20) providing late fireworks. Diana Baig impressed for Pakistan, claiming 4-47 but missing a five-wicket haul due to a no-ball.
In reply, Pakistan’s batting faltered despite Sidra Amin’s fighting 81. India’s bowlers dominated, with Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana taking five wickets between them, and Kranti Goud’s three-wicket burst earning her player of the match.
The result lifted India to the top of the points table, while Pakistan remain winless in the tournament.
