Imran Khan US lobbying campaign

Imran Khan’s sons have started a global lobbying effort to seek the release of their father, the jailed former prime minister of Pakistan.

Sulaiman Khan, 28, and Kasim Khan, 26, met with former US presidential envoy Richard Grenell in California. Grenell, known for his support of Imran Khan, posted a photo of the meeting on social media. He encouraged the brothers to “stay strong” and said they are not alone in this fight.

Imran Khan has been in Adiala Jail since August 2023. He is serving time in a £190 million corruption case and facing multiple charges, including terrorism-related offenses from the May 9, 2023 protests.

The meeting marks the first major step in the Imran Khan US lobbying campaign. The goal is to raise international awareness and gain support from American lawmakers and human rights groups.

The Khan brothers also met Dr. Asif Mahmood, a Pakistani-American physician and vice chairman of the US Commission on International Religious Freedom. Dr. Mahmood praised their efforts and expressed pride in their mission. He also applauded Grenell’s support for justice and fairness.

Earlier this month, Imran Khan’s sister Aleema Khan had announced the brothers’ trip to the US. She said they would raise awareness of their father’s imprisonment before returning to Pakistan.

The Pakistani government has not issued an official statement on the lobbying campaign. However, State Minister for Law and Justice Barrister Aqeel Malik said the right to assemble in Pakistan is reserved for citizens. He noted that since the brothers are British nationals, they cannot legally participate in political activities inside Pakistan.

There were mixed reactions from ruling party members. Some supported allowing the brothers to visit Pakistan, while others warned of legal and visa issues.

This campaign has sparked debate both in Pakistan and abroad, highlighting the ongoing political tension surrounding Imran Khan’s detention.
