Imran Khan, the former prime minister of Pakistan and current prisoner, plans to apply for the position of chancellor at Oxford University. The role became available following the resignation of Lord Patten, who had served as chancellor for 21 years.

The chancellor’s role is largely ceremonial and involves presiding over major university ceremonies. The election for this position will be held online for the first time, allowing Oxford’s extensive alumni network to vote.

Khan, who is serving a ten-year jail sentence on charges he denies, including inciting violence against the military, expressed his intention to run in a recent jail interview. He highlighted his past connections with Oxford, where he studied Economics and Politics and captained the cricket team. Khan has previously held a similar ceremonial role as the chancellor of Bradford University from 2005 to 2014.

His advisor, Syed Zulfi Bukhari, confirmed the candidacy and mentioned that a public announcement and signature campaign will follow.
