Imran Khan Names Mahmood Achakzai as Opposition Leader

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former prime minister Imran Khan has nominated Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mahmood Khan Achakzai as the new Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly.

According to reports, Khan conveyed the nomination during interactions with visitors at Adiala Jail, where he is currently imprisoned. The move comes after a leadership gap emerged due to the disqualification of former opposition leader Omar Ayub Khan.

Omar Ayub was stripped of his role as Opposition Leader, along with his membership in the Public Accounts Committee and other parliamentary committees, following his conviction by an anti-terrorism court over cases linked to the May 9 events.

Following the court’s verdict, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) formally issued disqualification notifications for Omar Ayub and PTI leader Shibli Faraz. Both leaders have since challenged the rulings in the Peshawar High Court.

In his petition, Omar Ayub argued that the ECP’s decision was unlawful and should be nullified. Likewise, Shibli Faraz filed a separate plea maintaining that his disqualification was invalid and sought the reversal of the notification.

This decision came after ECP Disqualifies Nine PTI Lawmakers Including Senate And NA Leaders
