Hurricane Melissa Leaves 49 Dead in Caribbean

Hurricane Melissa has claimed at least 49 lives across several Caribbean islands after unleashing torrential rain, violent winds, and flash floods. The powerful storm caused catastrophic damage, uprooting homes, toppling power lines, and leaving thousands displaced.

Authorities in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica reported widespread destruction, with many coastal towns cut off due to collapsed bridges and blocked roads. Emergency teams continue to struggle to reach affected communities as communication networks remain down.

Meteorological agencies have classified Melissa as a Category 4 hurricane, with sustained winds exceeding 210 kilometers per hour. The storm’s eye passed dangerously close to several populated islands, intensifying the devastation.

Governments have declared states of emergency, calling for international assistance to provide food, shelter, and medical support for displaced residents. Relief agencies warn that disease outbreaks and shortages of clean water are imminent concerns.

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency said rescue operations are ongoing but hindered by persistent flooding and poor weather conditions. More rain is expected in the coming days as the hurricane shifts northward toward open waters.

Experts have linked Melissa’s intensity to rising sea temperatures, warning that climate change is fueling stronger and more destructive storms across the region. Recovery efforts are expected to take months.
