Karachi authorities have allowed the reopening of sealed shops under strict SOPs for Karachi shops, officials confirmed on Monday.
The decision was made in a meeting chaired by Commissioner Karachi, Syed Hassan Naqvi. The session reviewed ongoing operations against encroachments and violations across the city.
Shopkeepers wishing to reopen their establishments must submit an application after a three-day waiting period. They are also required to provide an affidavit promising full compliance with the strict SOPs for Karachi shops. Any violation may result in immediate closure and possible arrest.
So far, authorities have sealed 430 shops and 177 hotels in Karachi for violating city regulations. District South recorded the highest number of closures, with 245 shops and 76 hotels sealed. District East had 98 shops and 52 hotels locked, while District Central had 27 shops and 19 hotels sealed. Korangi recorded 33 shops and 31 hotels under closure.
The crackdown included eateries, tea stalls, and markets across the city. Over 100 shops in Akbar Road’s motorcycle market were sealed, along with more than 300 establishments in Mobile Market, Preedy Street, M.A. Jinnah Road, Pakistan Chowk, Lilly Bridge Road, Clifton Block-2, and Nishtar Road. The operation, intensified from Friday, targeted shops and auto workshops illegally set up on footpaths and roads. Authorities emphasized that sealed premises would remain closed until owners demonstrate full compliance with the rules.
Commissioner Hassan Naqvi warned that any shop or eatery violating SOPs, even after submitting written assurances, would face immediate action. He said, “The sealed premises will stay shut until the owners can prove they are fully compliant.”
The renewed focus on city regulations comes as part of Karachi’s broader effort to clear public spaces and ensure safe, orderly markets. Officials stated that the enforcement of strict SOPs for Karachi shops aims to maintain discipline, prevent encroachments, and protect pedestrians and traffic flow.
Authorities assured the public that regular inspections will continue across all districts to ensure compliance. Shop owners have been urged to adhere strictly to the rules to avoid further legal action.
