Houthi rebels in Yemen have shot down seven US Reaper drones in less than six weeks, causing over $200 million in damages. Each drone, valued at approximately $30 million, was involved in surveillance and attack missions over Yemeni territory. Three of the drones were brought down in the past week, highlighting the Houthis’ growing ability to target unmanned aircraft.
The US has been conducting daily airstrikes against Houthi missile and drone threats in the region since March 15, under an expanded directive from former President Donald Trump. Despite the efforts, Houthi missile and drone attacks on military and commercial vessels have persisted, although no US Navy ships have been struck. Two US aircraft carrier groups, the USS Harry S. Truman and USS Carl Vinson, have been deployed to counter the ongoing threat.

Concerns about civilian casualties have also been raised, particularly following a strike at the Ras Isa fuel terminal, where over 70 people may have been killed. US senators have urged greater accountability and efforts to reduce civilian harm in the region.
As the investigation into the drone losses continues, US officials have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting regional stability and international maritime trade.
