Mike Hesson addressed debate about Babar Azam’s batting role in the T20 World Cup 2026 after Pakistan’s rain-hit training session in Colombo.
Speaking before the Super Eight clash against New Zealand, Hesson said team strategy, not reputation, determines batting order decisions during high-pressure powerplay overs.
He noted Babar understands his powerplay strike rate has been below 100, adding that modern T20 tactics demand aggressive starts tailored to conditions.
Questions intensified after Pakistan’s win over Namibia, where Babar was held back while Khawaja Nafay and Shadab Khan were promoted tactically.
Hesson explained the move was situational, as a turning left-arm spinner made sending a right-hander risky until the spell ended and momentum shifted.
The coach emphasized flexibility is essential in tournament cricket, saying Pakistan’s approach prioritizes matchups, conditions, and game awareness over fixed batting positions.
