Heavy rain brings life to a halt in Rawalpindi

RAWALPINDI – Following heavy rainfall in the twin cities, the water level in Nullah Lai has surged, leading to alerts for local authorities and residents. Main roads in Rawalpindi, including Murree Road, Liaquat Bagh, Mall Road, and Saddar Bazaar, have been inundated, turning into makeshift lakes. Business activities have been halted, and traffic congestion is severe, with traffic wardens absent from their posts. Water has seeped into shops in Mochi Bazaar, Mori Bazaar, and Sadiqabad Chowk.

The Meteorological Department reported significant rainfall, with 65 mm recorded at Saidpur, 51 mm at Golra, 110 mm at Peebokra, and 94 mm at Kachehri. Consequently, the water level in Nullah Lai has risen to 10 feet at Katarian and 9.5 feet at Gwalamandi. Rainwater has flooded homes in several areas of Rawalpindi, with water reaching several feet deep in some residences. Streets in Shale Village, Tench Bhata, and People’s Colony are submerged, trapping residents indoors.

Additionally, a house in Military Colony collapsed during the rain, likely due to the heavy downpour. Rescue teams were dispatched to the site, and fortunately, there were no casualties as the house was unoccupied at the time. Despite continuous rain over the past three days, the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) and the Cantonment Board have struggled to manage the situation. Inner-city streets, including underpasses, are now filled with floodwater, rendering drainage efforts ineffective.
