A harassment complaint has been filed against four suspended opposition members of the Punjab Assembly by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MPA Rahila Khadim Hussain. The complaint, which marks a significant development, accuses the opposition lawmakers of using abusive and unparliamentary language during a recent session. The petition was submitted to Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan and includes audio recordings as evidence of the alleged misconduct.
In her complaint, Rahila Hussain stated that the opposition members created a hostile work environment, particularly targeting female lawmakers. She described the actions of the opposition members as harassment in the workplace, violating the decorum of the assembly. Hussain’s petition is filed under workplace harassment provisions, a legal framework designed to protect individuals from inappropriate behavior at work.
The complaint refers to Rule 223 of the Rules of Procedure of the Provincial Assembly of Punjab, which outlines proper conduct during assembly sessions. Hussain has urged the Speaker to initiate disqualification proceedings against the accused opposition members. She has also called for punitive measures to be undertaken based on the 2010 disciplinary framework, which provides guidelines for handling misconduct.
The Speaker’s office has not issued an official response to the petition, but sources indicate that the matter is under review. The harassment complaint follows the suspension of 26 opposition members earlier this month. They were suspended for disrupting assembly proceedings, which included loud protests, sloganeering, and accusations exchanged during the session. The political tension in Punjab continues to rise, with both sides preparing for further confrontations and actions.
