Hamas has called for its fighters to be allowed safe passage out of Gaza’s vast tunnel system as pressure inside the enclave continues to rise. The group released a statement saying many fighters have been trapped underground for extended periods, facing shortages of food, medical supplies, and communication links.
According to the statement, Hamas claims the humanitarian situation inside the tunnels has become “unsustainable,” urging international mediators to push for guarantees that fighters can emerge safely. Officials linked to the group say constant bombardment and tunnel collapses have worsened conditions.
The plea comes as regional negotiations continue, with multiple governments attempting to reduce hostilities and secure access for aid. Analysts say the call reflects growing strain within Hamas’s ranks due to months of conflict and targeted operations.
Israeli authorities have repeatedly stated that the tunnels serve as military infrastructure and cannot be granted immunity. Officials argue that any safe passage would allow fighters to regroup or re-enter combat zones, complicating security efforts.
International observers note that the situation highlights the severe toll of prolonged fighting on all parties. Rights groups have urged both sides to prioritise civilian protection and uphold humanitarian principles.
Talks remain ongoing, but no agreement has been announced. Regional leaders warn that without a breakthrough, the conflict’s humanitarian impact will deepen further.
