Gulf Countries Announce Visa Relief Amid Airspace Closures

Several Gulf nations have introduced temporary relief measures to support travelers stranded due to widespread airspace closures and ongoing regional tensions affecting international flights.

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Qatar announced visa extensions and fine waivers for visitors and residents unable to travel because of flight cancellations and delays. Officials said the initiatives aim to ensure travelers are not penalized for circumstances beyond their control.

In the United Arab Emirates, the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security confirmed that tourists and certain residents who cannot depart due to disrupted flights will not face overstay fines. The measure, effective from February 28, 2026, applies to visitors on tourist or visit visas, individuals holding exit permits, and residents who had already cancelled their residency while preparing to leave the country. Authorities described the decision as a humanitarian step to ease travel-related hardships.

Kuwait has introduced automatic visa extensions for all visit and entry visas for one month starting February 28, 2026. Additionally, residents currently outside Kuwait who exceeded permitted absence periods will receive an automatic three-month absence permit. Officials stated the process will be completed entirely online, eliminating the need for in-person visits. All related fines and administrative fees have also been waived, with authorities advising residents to monitor updates through official digital platforms such as the Sahel application.

Meanwhile, Qatar announced a one-month automatic extension for all visa categories, including those already expired, beginning February 28, 2026. The extension will be processed electronically without requiring applications or payments. However, individuals with previous visa violations must clear outstanding penalties before benefiting from the relief measures. Authorities also urged residents and visitors to follow safety guidelines during the ongoing regional situation.

Governments across the Gulf emphasized that these temporary policies are part of coordinated regional efforts to assist travelers affected by airspace closures, ensuring flexibility and legal protection for those facing unexpected travel disruptions.
