Govt Seeks Investment for Multan-Lahore Rail Project

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]The caretaker Federal Minister for Communication, Railways & Maritime, Shahid Ashraf Tarar, has expressed the intention to explore the possibility of obtaining investment for the Multan-Lahore section of the Main Line (ML-1) through a Build Operate and Transfer (BOT) approach.

This statement was made following a briefing received by Tarar on various aspects of railway service delivery, including operational, financial, and administrative matters. The Secretary/Chairman Railways, Syed Mazhar Ali Shah, provided the briefing to the Federal Minister.

Tarar highlighted the paramount importance of ensuring the safety of passengers during train operations. He emphasized the need for Pakistan Railways to take swift measures to guarantee passenger safety. He urged all departments responsible for train safety to conduct immediate safety audits and assessments. He further directed for a comprehensive report detailing identified gaps, necessary rectifications, and recommendations to be submitted within a period of 7 days.

Speaking about the significance of the Main Line (ML-1) project within the framework of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), Tarar stated that it holds strategic value and will be pushed forward for early implementation. Additionally, he indicated the willingness to explore the option of seeking investment for the Multan-Lahore section of ML-1 through a BOT arrangement.

Tarar concluded by pledging dedicated efforts towards strategic initiatives aimed at enhancing both the safety and efficiency of service delivery within Pakistan Railways. He also stressed the importance of improving the financial health of the organization as part of these efforts.
