Government Shifts Islamabad Airport to Privatization After UAE Delay

The government has decided to drop plans to outsource Islamabad Airport to the United Arab Emirates. Abu Dhabi reportedly showed no interest in advancing the process, according to official sources.

Instead, Islamabad Airport will now be included in the active privatization list. The move follows the government’s recent experience with the privatization of Pakistan International Airlines. Officials believe this approach will ensure better management and efficiency.

The decision came after repeated delays by the UAE in nominating a company for the outsourcing arrangement. Pakistan had issued a final call letter seeking clarity. In response, the UAE indicated it could not confirm a participating entity and was not willing to continue under the proposed arrangement.

Earlier talks had been limited strictly to Islamabad Airport. Several draft framework agreements were exchanged, but progress stalled due to the UAE’s inability to name a company for the deal.

With the outsourcing plan now canceled, Islamabad Airport will join Karachi and Lahore airports on the active privatization list. Authorities say this step is part of a broader effort to privatize key national assets and improve airport operations.

Privatization officials emphasize that including Islamabad Airport alongside Karachi and Lahore airports will attract local and international investors. They believe privatization can help enhance efficiency, service standards, and infrastructure development.

The government has not yet announced a specific timeline for the privatization process. However, officials have confirmed that steps will be taken soon to ensure a smooth transition.

This decision ends months of uncertainty over the airport’s management. Experts suggest that moving Islamabad Airport toward privatization may provide more control over operations and reduce delays in decision-making.
