Sindh Launches Free Eye Screening Program for Schoolchildren Amid Rising Mobile Use Concerns
The Sindh Education Department has launched a province-wide eye screening campaign for students in government schools, responding to rising concerns about mobile phone usage affecting children’s vision.
A formal notification has been dispatched to all district education offices, instructing school heads to fully cooperate with the program. The department has also issued a No Objection Certificate (NOC) to an authorized NGO conducting the screenings.

The initiative will provide free eye checkups for students across all districts. Those found to have vision issues will receive prescription glasses at no cost.
Dr. Fouzia Khan, Chief Advisor of the Curriculum Wing, emphasized the importance of timely intervention. “The use of mobile phones is impacting children’s eyesight. School heads must cooperate fully to help prevent long-term vision damage,” she stated.
Experts warn that vision problems like myopia and hyperopia often go undetected, particularly in low-income communities with limited access to eye care. Such undiagnosed issues can hinder academic performance and affect children’s daily well-being.
Health professionals have long advocated for mandatory vision screenings at school entry levels, arguing that early diagnosis can dramatically improve a child’s quality of life and learning outcomes.
