Government Blames ‘VPN Overuse’ for Internet Slowdown

Minister of State for Information Technology Shaza Fatima Khawaja addressed concerns about the recent internet slowdown, denying that the government was responsible for it. Speaking at a press conference, she attributed the slowdown to the increased usage of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), which she said had created additional pressure on internet infrastructure.

Khawaja reassured the public that the government was not behind the throttling of internet services, describing such allegations as “completely false.” She clarified that the slowdown was a result of the high volume of VPN traffic and emphasized that efforts were underway to address and prevent further internet issues.

The minister acknowledged recent disruptions, including slowdowns in internet speed and service interruptions on platforms like WhatsApp, but asserted that the government was upgrading its web management system to enhance cybersecurity. This includes combating threats without impacting regular internet usage.

Recent reports from the IT sector indicated that the internet slowdown might be linked to the government’s implementation of a firewall. Digital rights experts have voiced concerns that this firewall could hinder economic growth and affect the IT sector significantly.

In her address, Khawaja also highlighted several IT initiatives, including efforts to digitize government processes, attract investment in the IT sector, and create job opportunities. She mentioned the establishment of e-employment centers, I-Parks, and a Pakistan Start-Up Fund, as well as partnerships with tech giants like Google and Meta to provide coding skills to youth.

Khawaja stressed that the government’s priority is to advance the IT sector and support digital innovation, with a focus on making federal operations paperless and fostering investment in technology.
