According to Android Police, several Gmail settings can help reduce unwanted messages. These tools can also limit exposure to suspicious emails.
Report Phishing Emails
One of the simplest ways to deal with suspicious messages is reporting them as phishing.
Phishing emails often pretend to come from trusted companies or online services. They may try to collect passwords, financial details, or other personal information.
Users should avoid clicking links or opening attachments in suspicious emails.
To report a message, open the email and select the three-dot menu. Then choose the Report phishing option.
Gmail already checks incoming messages for possible phishing threats. However, some suspicious emails can still reach users’ inboxes.
Reporting these messages gives Google additional information for its security systems. The reported email is moved to the Spam folder.
If a message is reported by mistake, users can open it from Spam. They can then select Report not phishing.
Create Gmail Filters
Not every unwanted email is a phishing attempt. Promotional messages and marketing emails can also quickly fill an inbox.
Gmail provides filters that allow users to automatically manage specific types of messages.
Users can access these tools by opening Settings. They should then select See all settings and open Filters and Blocked Addresses.
From there, users can select Create a new filter.
Filters can identify emails using different conditions. These include the sender, subject, specific words, and message size.
After setting the conditions, users can choose an action. Gmail can archive, delete, mark, or star matching messages.
For persistent unwanted emails, users can select the Delete option.
Block Entire Domains
Blocking individual senders may not always stop a spam campaign. Scammers can use several addresses under the same domain.
Users can therefore create filters for an entire domain when they identify a clear pattern.
This option is also available under Filters and Blocked Addresses. Users should carefully check the domain before blocking it.
A typing mistake could cause important emails from a legitimate domain to be filtered.
Existing filters can also be reviewed, changed, or removed from the same settings page.
Review Blocked Senders
Gmail also allows users to block individual email addresses.
To block someone, users can open their email and select the three-dot menu. They can then choose the block sender option.
The sender does not receive a notification about the block. Future messages from that address are sent directly to Spam.
Users can review blocked addresses through Gmail settings. They can also unblock an address if it was blocked accidentally.
Stay Careful With Suspicious Emails
Gmail’s security features can reduce unwanted messages, but they cannot stop every scam.
Users should remain cautious when receiving emails from unknown senders. Suspicious messages should not be opened or interacted with unnecessarily.
Using different email addresses for different purposes can also reduce spam.
A primary account can be reserved for banking, work, and other important services. A secondary address can be used for websites and occasional registrations.
