‘Golden Dome’ Trump Unveils Next-Generation US Missile Defense Plan

President Trump Announces ‘Golden Dome’ Missile Defence System to Counter Advanced Threats

President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for the ambitious “Golden Dome” missile defence system, aimed at protecting the United States from an array of emerging aerial threats including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, hypersonic weapons, and space-based attacks. The system is slated to become operational before the end of Trump’s current term.

Directed shortly after Trump’s return to the White House, the project involves a multi-layered shield spanning land, sea, and space. An initial budget of $25 billion has been allocated, with long-term costs estimated at $175 billion. Independent analysts, however, project expenses could surpass $500 billion over two decades, primarily due to its space-based components.

In an Oval Office statement, Trump highlighted the system’s advanced capabilities, featuring integrated space sensors and interceptors designed to detect and neutralize missile threats from vast distances, including from space itself. He claimed the system’s interception success rate could approach 100 percent.

The programme will be managed by Space Force General Michael Guetlein, vice chief of space operations, under a centralized command structure to ensure rapid response and coordination.

Modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome but vastly expanded in scale, the Golden Dome is designed to counter diverse threats such as hypersonic glide vehicles and fractional orbital bombardment systems—space platforms capable of delivering global warheads.

Canada has expressed interest in collaborating on the project, with former Canadian Defence Minister Bill Blair citing shared security concerns, especially regarding Arctic monitoring.

Pentagon officials stress the urgency of upgrading missile defences, noting that rival nations like Russia and China have developed increasingly sophisticated weapons that outpace current US systems. A recent Defence Intelligence Agency briefing warned that missile threats are expanding in both scale and complexity.

“There really is no current system,” President Trump said, underscoring the unprecedented nature of the Golden Dome programme.

The initiative marks a significant expansion in US missile defence ambitions and could redefine the future of aerial and space security amid rising global threats
